Design Work

Hawk Season

In 2019, I launched an online shop called Hawk Season which showcased my raptor artwork on shirts, stickers and other merchandise. The concept behind Hawk Season was to create small batches of goods featuring seasonal raptor designs, and then switch up the inventory every season.

Since Hawk Season launched in February 2019, I’ve completed four “seasons” and shipped over 300 orders across the United States and Canada.

Cape May Raptor Banding Project

In 2019, I collaborated with Cape May Raptor Banding Project on new graphics which eventually became a logo, shirt and sticker. The CMRBP is a non-profit organization that has been monitoring raptors for over 50 years in Cape May, NJ. Their scientists and volunteers run multiple projects each season out of New Jersey, all for the purpose of greater insight into raptor health. Needless to say, they are my kind of people! Working with Social Media Coordinator Mandy Mathews was a blast as she created a stellar concept, while I just helped bring the birds to life. The graphics depict a juvenile Cooper’s Hawk (the most frequently caught raptor in the project) with leg band in front of the iconic Cape May Lighthouse. Overhead, a Peregrine Falcon and Red-tailed Hawk cruise by.

Owl Research Institute

In 2019, I collaborated with the Owl Research Institute on their campaign to raise funds for Long-eared Owl conservation and awareness. The ORI is a non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife research, focusing on owl conservation and education. Since 1988, ORI has been at the forefront of the latest in owl fieldwork, running dozens of studies all over North America. Working with Development Coordinator Liberty DeGrandpre on this well-executed campaign was a true delight. The graphics depict a Long-eared Owl, a secretive and little-known owl species, and a current focus of one of ORI’s long-term research studies. The Long-eared Owl graphic eventually went on a Custom Ink shirt fundraiser campaign, in addition to stickers and patches.

Raptor Tales Rescue

I had a great time working with Raptor Tales Rescue of Shrewsbury on a new logo. The design was a collaborative exercise with founder Jessica Zorge, as we tried to bring life to the concept of each raptor having a unique story to tell. Local wildlife rehabilitators have a difficult but critical job in preserving the wild lives that we share our local communities with. Their work requires incredible skill and experience, and is often done without reward. They depend on community support to function. A huge thank you to Raptor Tales Rescue and all the local rehabilitators out there – find and support your local wildlife rehab today. Massachusetts followers: give them a follow on Facebook to learn more about your wild neighbors.

HMANA (Hawk Migration Association of North America)

The folks at HMANA (the Hawk Migration Association of North America) asked me to help be a part of the planning of some new graphics for their 50th anniversary conference coming up in 2024. The design was a collaborative exercise with board member Bob Pettit as he had a specific vision and concept that I was able to expand into a full set of promotional graphics. The 50th anniversary logo is based on the current HMANA branding with its iconic Golden Eagle. This eagle illustration is based off of a photo that Bob provided; the rest came together nicely.

Let’s Collaborate!

I would love to collaborate with you on any future design project (and it doesn’t have to include raptors! …but it doesn’t hurt either.) Please contact me to discuss your upcoming project! –BR
